Install a medium-small welding
tip on the torch.~

Open the acetylene torch
valve just enough to hear gas
flowing out of the torch tip.
Using a spark lighter, ignite
the gas. (If the equipment was
recently assembled, you might
have to bleed air out of the
hose before it will ignite.)~

Let the fire burn for one
second, then close the acetylene
valve on the torch. Always close
the valve lightly - tightening
it too much grinds a ridge into
it which makes future adjustment
of the flame difficult.~

You'll notice that the fire was
very smoky. The floppy black
dust you see rising into the air
will settle all over you and
your stuff. This is why a welder
never lights pure acetylene. We
just did that to demonstrate the
dust and to show a pure acet-
ylene flame. Here's how you
really light a torch:~
